The Cruelties of Human Nature
Human nature leads us to be harsh and cruel to people through the way we treat others, whether it's with or without our knowledge. This idea is portrayed in the novel “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley, where the reader can discover the sad life of an abominable creature through it's experiences with human nature. Mary Shelley uses characterization of the creature and the conflicts that he encounters to convey that most people are basically cruel which is evidenced by disgust, rejection, and selfishness.

The creature experiences his worst form of rejection after he had had high hopes of gaining the approval of someone, only to be let down in an instant and harsh manner. The monster describes his experience as, “...in a transport of fury, he dashed me to the ground and struck me violently with a stick” (145). The harsh striking and behavior is all ro emphasize the rejection of the creation, showing how cruel man can be. Man’s nature is to reject and decline things we disapprove of, instead of considering factors that can be good about what we’re rejecting. After having experienced the cruelty of rejection, the monster develops more character, where he becomes suicidal due to the harsh reality of rejection brough upon him. The monster expresses his thoughts through the quote, “Why did I live? Why, in that instant did I not extinguish the spark of existence…”(146). The monster experiences cruel rejection, and his character builds up as he wants to die and becomes depressed. This shows how hurtful rejection can be, especially when not done kindly, and is a demonstration of people's cruelty. Disgust demonstrates the disapproval of someone or something based on one’s own judgment. Rejection shows one’s cruelty through its harsh outcomes and let-downs. And selfish acts are of utmost cruelty due to its idea of putting one’s own benefits before someone else's who may need it more than oneself. It is important to know that basically everyone is cruel because it entices mindfulness of one’s own cruelties. When one is aware of their cruel actions towards others, they can refrain from doing so and having the knowledge of how certain actions can hurt others people will know how not to treat one
