When you think of Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, what is the first thing you think of? Is it a scary monster? A crazy scientist. Or even your favorite Halloween costume? Frankenstein has become an iconic pop culture reference, but when you dig deep, underneath the Halloween costumes and scary movies you can find many themes. One of those themes is revenge. Gris Grimly does a fantastic job showcasing this theme through pictures in his modernized version of Frankenstein. You can see this revenge while looking at how the creature takes revenge on Victor. In addition, he also killed William. You can see on page 113 that he kills William because he is calling him a “hideous monster” and an “ugly wretch.” He also takes revenge on Victor. On page 142 the creature says “I go; but I shall be with you on your wedding night.” He says this so Victor knows the creature will take something very dear to Victor on his wedding night. Then kills Clerval that night and Elizabeth, and Victor’s father on his wedding day after Victor destroys the mate he promised to make for the creature. Initially, Victor wants to take revenge on the creature for killing William. We can see this in Volume II Chapter 2 page 83 Victor says, “Begone, or let us try our strength in a fight, in which one of us must fall.” He says this because he is angry at the creature for killing William and framing Justine.
