In what way is Frankenstein a Gothic Novel? This essay will identify the elements and characteristics of gothic literature that are exemplified by the Frankenstein novel and illustrate what ways Frankenstein is a gothic novel. In researching this topic, I found a professor named John Mullan who extensively studied the origin of the gothic genre. Throughout his reference material, Mullan consistently says that the gothic genre was most used and recognized in the 18th and 19th centuries. (British Library #1). Victor had everything going for him. He was smart, going to school and had a clear path of how he wanted to achieve greatness by creating life. The life he creates is not a valued life, it’s a monster whose creator has much hatred for from the first time he sees him. The monster may not be human but it has feelings and when Victor rejects it, the monster sets out to destroy him. The monster first demands that Victor create a mate or girlfriend for him who will look like the monster. At first my Victor agrees to help the monster but after worrying that a mate could mean that they have children, Victor decides that would be harmful to the human race. When Victor tells the monster about his decision not to make a mate, the monster sets out to destroy Victor by killing his brother William, his soon to be wife Elizabeth and by framing Justine for murder. Victor goes from being a hero for his creation of life for creating the monster to villain status and changing so many lives.
