Overview of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, 32nd President, 1882-1945 “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself”. Words from President Franklin D. Roosevelt commonly known as FDR. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born at springwood, Hyde Park, Dutchess County, New York on January 30th, 1882. In 1886 Franklin went to Gorton school, Massachusetts. After a couple of years, he left Gorton and entered Harvard university. He graduated from Harvard with AB degree on the June 24th, 1903. Franklins’ education did not stop there, in 1904 he entered Columbia Law School, in New York City. In New York, Franklin was elected to New York’s state Senate on November 8, 1910. It was known as the “court-packing” scheme 1937-1938. He threatened to change the composition of the Supreme Court and alienated men, who he needed in return. His little mistake was outweighed by his strengths. What FDR accomplished with huge confidence was the restoration of the nation’s courage. When he was in office, it was then Hitler was coming to power in Germany. It was then when people felt that fate was in the United States hands. FDR lived by this quote “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself”. He was confident, friendly, cheerful, and determined when on the radio during “fireside chats”. He developed a skill with the press, that no president before him have been on good terms with Americas fourth estate. Roosevelt also didn’t just speak, but he put actions behind his words. He backed up his actions with immediate feelings and what was based on the law. He provided relief and jobs for the unemployed.
