Franklin Delano Roosevelt played a key role in US History during the Great Depression and World War II. Navigating America through WWII was perhaps his greatest honor, along with rescuing the country from The Great Depression. However, he may not have been known for either achievement without first entering war. FDR was torn leading up to war, he desperately wanted to actively enter combat, while most of the hurting country was drastically opposed to actively fighting. The question becomes what was FDR doing before the United States actually entered the conflict, that was preparing or pushing America and the Allies for the fight against the Axis powers? To answer this question I think we can look at the legislation he passed, his comments on war in speeches and personal letters/diaries, comments from his cabinet and military leaders and by looking at meetings Roosevelt had with other Allied powers. The biography examines his life from birth, through his childhood/college and his rise from New York Senator to his time in the Oval Office. I believe that FDR’s journey through his own life directly shaped his plan for America in the coming war. Franklin saw what war did for America during the First World War, he knew the potential was there again in this war. I think Franklin’s battle with polio also shaped his political ideology. He knew most people did not want to fight polio, he knew he could defy the odds with the disease and beat it. Similarly, no American wanted to fight this war, but Roosevelt understood that the fight for freedom and justice in Europe was well worth the risk.
