In the poem Learning to Read, by Franz Wright, it is about a kid who is learning to read but, has some difficulties doing so. It mentions that one father is unavailable, and the mother who seems like she was going to “break” every time the character asked her for some help. She even considered asking help from her step father except, he barely spoke English and seems to belittle her whenever he gets the chance too. She run into many obstacles throughout her process, but nothing stops her from continuing on. The reason I chose this poem was because, it reminds me of myself. As a young kid, I had troubles learning how to read. At one point, I had to personally go to a different classroom where the teacher would have a one-on-one with me. I relate with the character in many ways, for one, my parents do not speak fluent English meaning, they were not able to help me learn on how to read in English. The character in the poem states, “Loneliness, boredom, and terror. My motivation fiercely fuelled.” I think this means the character chose to keep on reading because of these things, they kept themselves going because they were tired of not knowing on how to read, and basically, made a list on why they should keep going. This accurately explains on my I kept on learning. Whenever I became tired or just blue with the world itself, I would curl up in my bed while my nose was buried deep in a book.
