According to the materiel Of The People, Frederick Douglass was born as Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey in Talbo Country, Maryland, in 1818. He was born into slavery and at the age of seven he was sent to Baltimore and became a ship caulker. He hired out his labor, paying his master three dollars a week and keeping the rest for himself per their agreement. Frederick planned his escape when his master told him to pay him all his earnings rather that just the three dollars a week. After he escaped to the north he started attending and speaking at antislavery meetings.
He spoke impromptly in many places, but his most famous speech that helped to kick start his role in the anti-slavery movement, was in Nantucket where he told the story of his life as a slave. This speech was so moving that one of the attendees, Lloyd Garrison, asked him to become a public speaker for the American Anti-Slavery Society. Shortly after he joined the American Anti-Slavery Society, Douglass published his first autobiography entitled, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave. During this time, he was also writing for many different newspapers, such as North Star, Fredrick Douglass’ Paper, and Douglass’ Monthly. Fredrick was a very strong advocate for the freedom of slaves and worked very closely with President Lincoln to help fight for freedom.
Slavery started in the year of 1619 in the southern part of the United States. Maryland is on the South side of the United States where slavery was. Slavery was still a way of life when Frederick Douglass was born. Douglass was born into slavery, although the date of when he was born is not exact. Douglass was one of the slaves that is remembered well by a lot of people because he was a slave that became an abolitionist and wrote a book entitled Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass.
Abolitionism was a well-known movement around the time of the Civil War and its aim was to put an end to slavery. The people of the early nineteenth century viewed the elimination of slavery in numerous ways. Some fought against the end of slavery, some appeared to mildly support the cause and yet others wholeheartedly supported the ending of slavery until their dying day. Charles Finney was a religious leader who promoted social reforms such as the abolition of slavery. He also fought for equality in education for women as well as for African Americans.
In writing almost thousands of of lectures and speeches, Frederick Douglass began to be an example to minorities, bringing them hope. He shared his influential opinion on racism and compelling ideas on what people can do to change it. Though some saw Frederick Douglass as just an outspoken slave, he gradually became famous and well known for his oratory skills and expertise in moving a crowd. Because of speeches and leadership in abolitionist movements, Douglass helped to bring to pass the Emancipation Proclamation. Through Frederick's campaign for black rights, he met with Abraham Lincoln and became his adviser.

The two documents “Abraham Lincoln Appraises Abolition (1854)” and “Douglass Looks Back on Abolition (1882)” refute each other on the subject of Abolition. Frederick Douglass took abolition as a very aggressive way to be against slavery while Abraham Lincoln saw it more intentionally than aggressive. Douglass was an avid abolitionist who really stretched for equality throughout blacks, females, and natives. He was apart of the newspaper The Liberator and was always making speeches on anti-slavery. Lincoln was Whig at the time of his speech but later became the leader of the Republican Party.
Furthermore, Douglass expands referring to the slave, “your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity…a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages” (Dilbeck, 2009, para. 6). In which history proves his acclamation in that Douglass himself had to endure through the blazing sun working as a slave and the adversity of oppression, before his exile from slavery. The DECA competition component involves a written exam and case study presentation, tailored to a specific business category. Teams are clustered by a school, where students may compete individually or in a partnership. My high school started DECA for the first time in 2014 and I thought, what better opportunity to pursue my interest in business than to become a founding member of this program at my school.
