The author’s message in Cookies is to get the reader to take things more lightly and not as serious. This message is demonstrated well when Douglass comments about the man who supposedly took his cookies. “The thing I particularly like about this story... only he doesn’t have the punch line” (Adams 1). Rather than being upset at the fact that he took the man’s cookies Douglass finds the positive element in the story and considers it humorous.
