Leadership played a very big role war in the Civil War and in this essay I will explain how one Union and one Confederate general displayed leadership. First I am going to talk about General Ulysses S. Grant who was a union General. General Grant is very well known as one of the better generals in the Civil War. General Grant show leadership throughout the Civil War this being one way he was a general who wasn’t afraid to push or attack the Confederates he showed this by overtaking the city of Vicksburg on May 19th, 1863. The reason of that being so vital to the war is because it split the Confederacy into 2 seperate parts.
Being a leader was difficult if you were a slave. Especially if you had a harsh master, that would punish you for every little thing you did wrong. But there was still some who persisted though these harsh conditions. Those leaders helped inspire other slaves and grow the population of slave leaders in the south.

They shared qualities such as respect, determination, and confidence, which are essential for good leadership. One quality between Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass was respect. In 1858 in Illinois state election there was about seven debates that took place there. These seven debates were called the Lincoln-Douglas Debates. The two main people that were involved in these debates were Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas. A very short summary of what the Lincoln-Douglas Debates were about is that they were mainly discussing two main topics. These two topics were slavery and State Rights.

Transcendentalist were known to be passionate in the social reform movement, human rights, education, abolishment and women's right. They had a view that all human being were deserving of the ability to be fully human. Surprisingly, Fredrick Douglass is a name that also sees the world in a very similar way as a Transcendentalist. Douglass' views on human nature and the future of the United States are parallel with the views of the Transcendental movement. One of the themes in Douglass' writing was the relationship between human nature and the power it had.

Douglass at a young age had a white mistress named Mrs. Auld who had taught him the alphabet. However, slavery proven to have an impact on her due to the teaching of a slave would cause a person to end up in prison or worse death. Mrs. Auld soon became an evil, bitter woman who treated him very harsh. Nevertheless teaching him the alphabet proven itself too late.
Frederick Douglas himself wrote the “Narrative of Frederick Douglas” and it is an 1845 memoir of his whole entire life. Frederick Douglas was not only one of the most important African-American men in United States history but one of the most important men period in United States period. He was a abolitionist, writer, statesmen, and social reformer. One thing that was extremely important to Frederick Douglas was his education. His education and how intelligent he is has a lot to do on why he was such an inspirational figure to many slaves in this dire time period.

While Lincoln was able to very successful leading with the head, it is important to know that he did an even better job leading with his heart. It takes an extremely intelligent person to be able to lead with both the head and the heart, leading with the heart entails, mainly emotional intelligence. Being able to be emotionally intelligent gave Lincoln the upper hand when it came to leading an entire country. When announcing the Emancipation Proclamation Lincoln simply told his cabinet what his plans was and let them know he did not need them to debate any further, however he then told them to give him their best ideas and he will use them to make his Proclamation even stronger. “From the very first day he tried to gain the respect of those who knew him and during his presidency, citizens could go visit him in his office” (SOURCE).
