Turner outlines transforming wilderness with Lockean labor and argues that Americans have a unique character of identity. Turner believes that the wilderness masters the colonist, and also that the colonist transforms the wilderness. When the wilderness masters the colonist, he becomes the “crude backwoodsman,” and when the colonist transforms the wilderness, it creates American identity.
