Influential figures such as Henry Clay and Andrew Jackson had “made their mark in politics after moving West”, and westward expansion engendered the establishment of technology such as canals and railroads (326). As America grew, however, so did the questions and issues surrounding the issue of slavery. Manifest Destiny was not just a catalyst for the expanse of slavery, but a hindrance as well, as the United States began to divide over this key issue in regard to whether a newly-acquired territory should be designated as free or slave. Though attempts were made at compromise, the spread of slavery through Manifest Destiny proved to be both the driving force for territorial expansion, as land was acquired in order to grow more, but also the challenge for it, as the continued growth of slavery and territory forced the United States to finally approach the issue and decide whether it would remain a divided country, or finally become united in its social, economic, and political
Nat Turners Rebellion became monumental for many people of color, he was idolized and respected for his courageous actions. The rebellion created fear that spread through the South, even those in favor for abolishment now wanted stricter laws for slaves. Turner was “recorded on the list of dishonor” for the organization he had lead (“An Address To The Slave Of The united Slaves”). There had been an interview by Thomas R. Gray, defending and slightly sympathizing with Turners actions, many rejected the validation of the interview and felt as if he just wanted “to trick, confuse, and overwhelm the slave’s minds.” (“The Southampton Tragedy”).
One of the most memorable periods in the course of American history is the Civil War. The Civil War was not the work of a single day, however, but the accumulation of several incidents that lead to increased tension and challenged the morality of slavery. An important event that lead to the questioning of slavery was the Southampton Insurrection, also known as Nat Turner’s Rebellion. This slave revolt was significant because it shattered the illusion that slaves were content with their horrid conditions, no matter how kind the master supposedly was, and questioned whether slavery was truly righteous under the eyes of Christian God.
In my opinion and based on readings I think that the western frontier fostered values of American democracy and individualism. Moving west allowed settlers and even immigrants the opportunity to make a new life for them and their families. The “Gold Rush” and mining for other precious metals such as silver, copper, lead and iron brought many people west to explore and find riches. I have been aware of the arguments presented in the film for a long time, and the opposition we face as Christians with regard to our Biblical stance around homosexual relationships and marriage. This film reminded me that we are facing and will be facing persecution for our beliefs at an increasing rate. It also reminded me that while we should remain vigilant in trying to uphold our convictions, we are to demonstrate the Holy Spirit indwelling us. More than anything homosexuals should know we love them, our position with regard to their lifestyle- comes secondary.
