Title As the world’s technologies advance and people immigrate to other countries, the way diversity is measured no longer works. In Steven Vertovec’s article “Super-diversity and its Implications” Vertovec describes super diversity. A new way to look at diversity in a more in depth way than previously done. Warren St. John’s novel Outcasts United is about the town of Clarkston, a town outside of Atlanta which is settled by many refugees.
The richness of El Paso, Texas relies on the vast diversity observed in each one of its citizens, which has opened the way for El Paso to develop as a multicultural city. Emigration has been one of the main factors that has diversified El Paso’s cultural background, citizens from all over the world have landed a foot over American territory and have made it theirs, several nationalities, several races, one community, one El Paso. Emigration has also caused the expansion of a plethora of traditions across the area, which has made El Paso’s culture an indispensable resource of the state of Texas. A diverse country, state or city is the one that values the difference in people and therefore recognizes that people with different backgrounds,
There is a major diversity in the culture of Texas. At first it was a place where all the white men were residing but now there is a large population of Latinos and African American. The Asians take up 4.2 percent of the state’s population so the diversity of the type of cultures in Texas makes it the majority-minority state. International and domestic immigration is increasing and diversifying the state’s population. Texans are generally younger and are generally poorer than individuals in other states.
In Philadelphia, there is a huge culture diversity in contrast to Millville. There is Chinatown and the Italian Market. In classrooms, students are black, white, Cambodian, Chinese, Korean, and much more. All the restaurants are different in culture, Italian, Vietnamese, Greek, and so much more. Every year they have a party of some sort dedicated to a specific culture such as the Puerto Rican and Italian Festival.
The diversity of cultures is one of the ways that our environments influence us. The existence of diverse cultures or ethnicities within a community is referred to as cultural diversity. Diversity affects us because there is more diversity in our society, workplaces, and educational institutions in terms of racial, ethnic, and ethnic groupings. In order to work effectively together, we first must understand one another so that we may both learn from one another. Geography educates us about fundamental physical processes that have an impact on our daily lives, which is another way in which it shapes who we are as humans.
One of my favorite parts of Rutgers University is the ability to meet people that may live only 20 minutes away but have experiences that are a complete contrast to your own. During my first-year at Rutgers University I thought I knew what diversity was, I was raised in Jersey City, one of the most diverse cities in the nation, so when I came to Rutgers I did not expect to find more diversity. At Rutgers, I have had the opportunity to meet people that are not just diverse in culture but also in age and experience. Here I have met a non-traditional student who graduated almost a decade ago and came back to get a second degree after finding a new passion. I have had the opportunity to grow closer with intriguing people such as a triplet, a professional photographer, and a professor who is deaf but defied the odds
I learned how there could even be a sense of diversity within a location originally dedicated for one ethnic group and like Canada slowly formed into a mixing pot of cultures. Though the subculture within Chinatown isn’t solely Chinese physically it does share many norms and values with its origins of China even if it is one of the oldest Asian communities in North
The Shield of Achilles Homer’s The Iliad is focused on inflated Greek heroes and the martial society in which they live. There is very little attention paid to the common people who do not possess incredible strength or have divine heritage. These mundane people and their society are mentioned only in epic similes, but images of what the reader can interpret as everyday Homeric life are depicted on the massive shield that Hephaestus crafts for Achilles. These images at first glance seem radically different from the martial world that the reader has experienced so far, but when studied closer, the shield also mirrors the central plot of The Iliad and demonstrates the differences between the two societies.
My most positive experience with race was when one of my dearest friends who happens to be Chinese, and her family invited me to spend the Chinese New Year with them. Instead of her family treating me as if I didn 't belong in the celebration, they treated me like an honored guest. They took special care to share their cultural traditions with me. Although it was quite obvious I was an outsider because I am not Asian, I felt the entire experience to be enriching and worthwhile, one of the most interesting evenings of the year. Having friends of all different races has broadened my perspective on life.
Living in a diverse community has many benefits when it comes to fitting in. With so
Not everyone is the same. Everyone has different skin tone, hair, eyes etc. … School is place everyone comes to study and I learn new things from everyone. I am learning a lot about new cultures and traditions because of this advantage of multiculturalism. I do believe Canada adequately supports a multicultural society because the government is so accepting of new immigrants and refugees.
It is natural for different cultures to blend and develop together as society evolves. Different groups pick up different elements of one another, thus creating diversity. There are many examples of this seen in fashion, media and art. Many clothing styles use traditional
Diversity is taken for granted in many places, such as Skokie, because people who are exposed to diversity early on in their lives do not know that it’s rare to have that diversity. They are accustomed to seeing other races and ethnicities besides their own. People are not always exposed to diversity at all or are used to having token people exposed to them being seen on tv or in movies. Tokenism is a big part of American culture and people have the token Black person, the token Hispanic person, or in extremely rare cases the token white person. Tokenism is a false diversity that allows the audience to believe that it is diverse when in actuality it is not.
But, living in a multicultural city is by itself a very beneficial exercise not only on a personal level but also in terms of cultural exchange, economic exchange and generating new ideas. One experiences what is called cultural variety when living in a diverse area. He is somehow introduced to new kinds of foods, architectures, arts, music, festivals, religions, mythologies, writings and more of general day-to-day life. These new things would easily open one’s heart and mind to new places, new ideas and new people. According to (Wolfstone, 2010) nowadays all people around the world happily go out and eat Chinese food, use Japanese technology, drive German
An example of a diverse society is Singapore. The definition of a diverse society is to have different types of people, who do not share the same race, culture, ethnicity, beliefs, practices, race, tradition, et cetera, to ‘come together’ and form a community. Living in a diverse society has its advantages. One of the advantages is that it can increase one’s knowledge, awareness and understanding about others culture, ethnicity, beliefs, practices, customs, tradition, et cetera. Despite that fact that living in a diverse society has its advantages, it also has its disadvantages.
