Tim Forster Mrs. Phipps C Block 6/12/24. Love and Fate in “Romeo and Juliet” Friar Lawrence says, “I am the greatest, but I was able to do the least” (281). In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, many characters, including Juliet's parents, made Juliet's death occur but the chief cause for Romeo's death was Friar Lawrence. So, whose fault was it? Friar Lawrence was the character that was creditworthy for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Friar Lawrence did not inform Romeo about the sleeping potion that Juliet was taking. Friar Lawrence gives a note to Friar John to deliver to Romeo that has all the information about what Juliet is going to do and how they are going to run off together. Friar John says, “I couldn’t send it” (257). Friar John could not deliver the note because he was quarantined for a disease. This was all Friar Lawrence's fault because if he wanted it to get there and he didn’t want to rely on someone, he could have brought the letter to Romeo himself. This means that the responsibility would be on him and not Friar John. When Friar Lawrence figures out about Romeo and Juliet trying to get married, he thinks that if they get married, it will end the feud between the two families. Friar Lawrence says “I’ll help you with your secret wedding” (103). This secret wedding ends up being a big deal because Juliet's parents are trying to get her to marry Paris. Friar Lawrence should have known better than to marry these two. Now Juliet doesn’t want to marry Paris, but her parents have already planned the wedding.
