This quote means that someone should find something so important to them that they are willing to die for it. For some this could be an object, a moral/value, or possibly even a person. This idea is demonstrated in the play “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare. In this play, there is a feud between the Capulet and Montague families. Earlier that day, Prince Escalus warns the families that death is the penalty for attempting to further the feud. Therefore, by attending the party Romeo could be bringing death upon himself. At the Capulet party, Romeo meets Juliet and they fall in love with each other. But Tybalt, who is Juliet’s cousin, takes Romeo’s attendance as a sign of disrespect and challenges Romeo to a duel. Because Lord Capulet does not know about his daughter’s marriage to Romeo, he tries to force her to marry Paris. Juliet makes it clear that she would rather be dead than marry Paris. So, Friar Lawrence then devises a plan for Juliet to run away with Romeo. Therefore Friar Lawrence is largely to blame for the untimely deaths of Romeo and Juliet because his risky plan fails. The friar’s plan starts with Juliet taking a potion on Wednesday night that will make her look dead when the nurse tries to wake her in the morning. While explaining the rest of his plan, the Friar states, “Hold, get you gone; be strong and prosperous / In this resolve. I’ll send a friar with speed / To Mantua with my letters to thy lord” (4.1.122-124). This means that Friar Lawrence will send another friar to deliver a letter to Romeo that contains the plan. Then Romeo will go to Verona to retrieve Juliet from her family’s tomb in which she will wake. Juliet is skeptical about this plan but she goes through with it because she cannot stand the thought of living without Romeo. As the plan is set in motion, Juliet’s nurse goes to wake her on the morning of her wedding to Paris. The Friar’s plan was sped up because Lord Capulet moved the wedding from Friday to Thursday.
