Frida Kahlo born Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calderón was born in July 6, 1907 in Coyoacán, Mexico and died July 13, 1954. Kahlo who even after 70 have past since her death is still regarded as one of the most influential surrealist artists of all times. Kahlo who was one of four daughters was of hungarian descent from her paternal side and of mexican indian and spanish descent from her maternal side. At a young age she developed and survived polio, so she decided to become a doctor by enrolling in the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria, but then decided to pursue art. Frida was recognized nationally and in America and Europe, she used this fame to spread her culture like wildfire. Kahlo adored her Mexican heritage, she enjoyed dressing in traditional Mexican clothing as mentioned in the New Yorker in 1938 “but Mrs. Rivera sticks to the Tehuantepec costume and got asked if she was a fortune-teller when she was on the subway the other day.” And would market her culture on herself. She also drew images and inspiration from her culture and would also add it to her paintings, thus spreading Mexican Culture as fast as lightning, or as soon as somebody saw the paintings.
Frida was an amazing artist she managed to provide the world with her own reality, from her intrusive thoughts to her burdens that plagued her. She was able to combine woman empowerment and her culture into her paintings. Whether these things were put there intentionally or subconsciously as part of her afflictions they made the quality of her art altogether more relatable and enjoyable.
