In Friedrich Nietzsche’s Beyond Good and Evil, he creates a “new” evaluative system in which he distinguishes between the will to truth and the will to power and separates virtues from vices (1). In this book, Nietzsche rejects the values of traditional philosophy by using truth as opposed to lies and moral goodness instead of evil or bad (1). He begins to replace the traditional values with his preferences of strength and healthiness versus weakness and unhealthiness (2). His passionate and opinionated writing gives us clear insight into his perspectives and allows us to see the opposites values he contrasts (2). There are two main categories that everything could fall under, will to truth (inauthentic) and will to power (authentic), as well as a minor category, the maybes (2). The will to truth is seen as degenerate because it is energy draining and focuses on the objective perspectives, as opposed to the practical, subjective perspectives (1). Pity is seen as self-contempt, which Nietzsche believes is unhealthy because it causes us to become stuck and leaves us with no room for growth (222). This is considered a vice and is attacked because it shows the amount of immeasurable dissatisfaction one has with himself and his pride leads his to want to suffer alongside others (222). While pity is seen as unhealthy, the suffering is seen as the ultimate test of authenticity because suffering is the only place for growth to occur (225). Another vice that Nietzsche believes is degenerative is self-preservation (13). He believe this is a vice because it is based on fear and has a way of inhibiting growth (13). This self-preservation is also attacked because it has the power to lead us follow superfluous teleological principles
