Friendship is a necessity Loneliness is a condition in which no human being would like to encounter. The shadow it casts over you can be easily lifted with trust and compassion. In John Steinbeck’s spectacular novel Of Mice and Men, he explains how friendship and trust are an important part of every human being’s life, developing this eloquent theme throughout the story through mind boggling characterization and well used literary devices. In the beginning of the book, Steinbeck introduced the theme . On pages 15-16 in the novel, Steinbeck uses a very key event in the story in which shows the trust the characters have for each other, and to help to highlight just exactly what kind of relationship the two share. On page 15, when George told Lennie exactly what to do if he got into trouble,Steinbeck uses foreshadowing to describe and show George's inner character and his feelings for Lennie. It also shows how much George cares about Lennie, and it describes their friendship bond. In the text it says, “ ‘Course you did. Well, look. Lennie- if you jus’ happen to get in trouble like you always done before , I want you to come right here an’ hide in the brush.’ ‘Hide in the brush,’ said Lennie slowly.’Hide in the brush till I come for you. Can you remember that ?’ ‘Sure I can George. Hide in the brush till you come” (Steinbeck 15-16). This is a very important part of the story that Steinbeck included, because it introduces the friendship that George and Lennie have. Not only does it introduce the friendship, but it is beggining of the main theme that is developed throughout the book.
