Exploring the Importance of Friendship between Hetty and Sarah in the Novel Invention of Wings

The bonds you make with people can be crucial in needing moments. The novel Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd, shows how friendship is the leading theme in the novel. The belief in equality Sarah shows to Hetty is the foundation for the friendship and their freedom, compassion is shown in the novel a lot through acts of kindness, sympathy and many more, tough times can bring people together sometimes this friendship can be destructive, but in only brings them closer. When Tomfry and the men believed there was still a fire Sarah tried to come up with the words to tell the men there was no fire, but this was not enough and Hetty payed the price, “She brought the gold tip cane to the back of my head, worst blow I ever got. It drove me to my Knees” (kidd 23). Although this is a terrible moment for both Hetty and Sarah it brings them closer and Sarah’s thoughts of slavery have changed dramatically. Through one of the most dangerous decisions of Sarah’s and Hettys life to escape, friendship is the leading cause to freedom. When Sarah gives the plan of escape Hetty is all in, “I was relieved and terrified at the same moment”... I said “tell me how I can help”. (Kidd 353). Without the friendship of Hetty and Sarah this plan would have not be created, even though a terrifying time Hetty is nothing but helpful towards the escape. During the final scene/page true friendship is shown, “Sarah put her hand on my arm and left it there while the city heaved away” (Kidd 359). This concludes all Hetty and Sarah have been through after the whole escape, punishments, and many more, they continue to be friends and they realize what they truly mean to each
