Since the beginning of literature, women have been depicted as devious individuals. As a result, women put use to this stereotype to get what they want. This is proven, especially in medieval literature. Examples of this are shown in works like “Macbeth,” * Sir Gawain and the Green Knight,” and “The Canterbury Tales”.
Princess Sparkle Heart gets a Makeover by Josh Schneider, is a book that reflects both traditional and nontraditional norms because it’s about a girl, Amelia, and her doll that becomes damaged and then replaced with different body parts that don’t fit cultural expectations that normally portray a girl doll and Amelia still views her as beautiful. From looking at the book cover, you would expect this book to only reflect traditional norms. The title is pink, sparkly, and the font is flowy but at the same time it’s bold. Half of the words in the title are sparkly and the other half is made up of different patterns, and has screws and buttons sticking through them.
Expanitory Essay In stories meant to scare the reader, transformation symbolizes the cultural changes occuring in society. For example, in the stories “House Taken Over” and “The Feather Pillow” the authors use transformation and scary elements that happen to the charters to frighten us. Both stories are examples of Magical Realism. Magical Realism is realistic fiction.
Through the use of archetypes in the film Shrek, the theme of wrongful prejudices is portrayed. An archetype refers to an original model or pattern from which other later copies are made, especially a character, an action, or a situation that represents common patterns of human life. These patterns are often depicted in fairytale due to their trend of a theme. The archetype of transformation is evident in the storyline of Shrek. In Amal El-Mohtar’s “Seasons of Glass and Iron,” two women are trapped in magical situations: Tabitha is forced to wear down seven pairs of iron shoes by her abusive bear husband as punishment for trying to prevent his violence, while Amira is placed on a glass hill by her father to prevent the advances of suitors and keep her father’s kingdom united under his control. Magic here acts a metaphor for patriarchal power, and is used to impose restrictions upon women, just as the patriarchal system does. Through this metaphor, El-Mohtar asserts that the socially constructed patriarchal system is not intrinsic to society but, like magic, is an unnatural force, and advocates for a return to the natural base in order to reconstruct society. Throughout the story, magic works in the same way that power dynamics in a patriarchal society work, in that it works against the female characters, imposing restrictions on them, while it works in favour of men.
