Code Name Verity is a realistic fiction novel that takes place during the Holocaust. The book begins with Julie, the main character, writing her confession to the Nazi Gestapo in a prison in Ormaie, France. Then we figure out how she got there. Julie was a Wireless Operator in the British Special Operations Executive that interviewed suspected undercover Nazis. Her best friend, Maddie, was a pilot who would taxi passengers over war zones. Julie wanted a change of scene, so she decided to continue her job in a different area: Ormaie France. The squadron leader was supposed to taxi her to this area, but after he got into a car accident, Maddie took over the job. Even though she was not supposed to do this, Maddie would do anything for her best friend. The flight ended up not going as planned. The plane was crashing and Julie parachuted out, separating her and her best friend. After they figured out she was a spy, Julie was thrown into prison, and was forced to write a confession. She ended up making her confession out of lies, but the Gestapo didn’t know that. While this was happening, Maddie was being hidden by citizens in the Damask Resistance Circuit. This makes the main character, Julie, a lot more gloomy. She can hear her friends screaming from the room next door as they are getting tortured. She is also getting tortured, but she tries not to think of it until the time actually comes. Even with all of her fear, she still has hope. She is hopeful that someday she will make it out and be able to share her story. To help take her mind off of the horrible things that are going on around her, she writes her confession. Her confession isn’t just an ordinary confession, however. She tells stories throughout her writing and makes it almost like an autobiography. Writing also helps her think back to the many happy memories she had with her best friend,
