In the book The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton, the author uses a variety of motifs. Which is a distinctive feature or dominant idea in an artistic or literary composition. Each color used represents the feeling or characterization of objects and people in the book. With each color bringing an important piece to the theme. One of the colors that is used more than once is green.
The socs and the greasers are two different types social classes. The socs are the “haves”, meaning that they have nice cars, big houses, and wear nice clothes, like madras. The greasers, on the other hand, are the “have nots” with beat up cars, small houses, and simple clothing. And of course, they grease their hair, hence their name. One example where man vs society was present was when Cherry told Ponyboy not to take it personally if she totally ignores him in school.
The Outsiders; Book to Movie A famous book called The Outsiders became a movie in 1983. It was made by Francis Ford Coppola, he got the idea of making the book by S.E Hinton into a movie because he was inspired by a school librarian. The movie portrays the tough life of a gang in rural Oklahoma (Google). The book was published by S.E. Hinton in 1967, when she was only seventeen years old.
This novel by S.E Hinton, The Outsiders shows a crucial point that everybody is special in some way and should be known as who they are individuality not as a group. The Outsiders is a book that describes 2 gangs , the luxurious Socs, and the hoodlum Greasers. While they have conflicts with each other, the protaganist, Ponyboy, finds his identity outside of the gang. The important message of the story is that everyone has a unique personality that are developed by being in a group of people away from home, this identity can shape anyone’s way of life and the path they may take in the future. First of all, Socs and greasers have a trademark that showed who was part of their gang, Socs are know for Mustangs, Madras, and leather jackets;
One of the primary examples of functionalism appears the occupations the citizens hold. Jonas's mothers hold an exceptionally important role in society. His mother works for the department of justice in the community. Her job duty consists of punishing individuals who break the rules. At dinner, she explains to her family that she feels "disappointment."
One setting that’s significant in The Outsiders is the church in Windrixville. When Johnny Cade and Ponyboy Curtis flee to escape getting caught, they are instructed to go to an empty church. Curtis and Cade hid there for about five days waiting till Johnnys’ crime dies down. Johnny and Ponyboy talk about how “Nothing Gold Can Stay” and reflect on each other’s lives. When Winston comes to talk to both of them, and go to a drive-in, they go back to the church, and the church is on fire.
All individuals have certain social roles that when working together, form society, this allows for there to be inequality amongst individuals. Functionalism also says that social order is maintained through public consensus. So, the adjustments that the public makes in response to deviant behavior, allow for change within this theory. About Mean Girls, functionalist would view all the different groups in this movie as necessary to the functionality of high school. There are many different groups in the movie, for example the lunchroom scene shows us these separate groups.

Hilton, we go to a time where gangs remain dominant and run the streets. S.E. Hinton tells us about two enemy gangs. The Socs, one of the many provocative gang groups, kids who live lavish lives and get away with the crimes they commit because they look clean cut and look like good innocent kids on the outside.
In sociology, there are three theoretical perspectives; symbolic interactionism, functional analysis and conflict theory. The major point of symbolic interactionism is to use symbols to help understand how we as a society view the world, and how we communicate with one another. In functional analysis, the major point is to look at society as a whole, constructed of various parts, or groups, that all have their own function. Lastly, conflict theory is the opposite of functional analysis. In this perspective, society is viewed as different groups, each competing for power, or dominance.
Whenever we need to break unsatisfactory habits, change our ways of thinking, or even do something differently, no matter how hard we try, many of us go back to our old habits/selves. It is important to use all our will and realize when we are referring back to our old ideology and try as much as we can to build a new way of thinking. Through many classic stories, main characters look as if they are on their road to change by starting to build the new, but it is just too hard for them and they want conformity, so they go back to their old selves. Hinton’s classic young adult novel, The Outsiders, will end tragically unless he adopts a pet in which he grows and bond and cares for.
Socs or greasers, everyone can relate to different themes through personal experiences. In The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, Hinton mentions different universal themes such as family, change, and loss. The Outsiders tells a story about a teenage boy who grew up as a greaser and in a neighborhood filled with trouble. His friend and him get into huge trouble, so they have to rely on each other and other gang member to get through hard times. One theme that is touched in The Outsiders is the definition of family.
While conflict theory believes that society is set into place, and will vary depending on the wealth and power of the people involved (Dottin). In conflict theory, there is a constant struggle between those who have, and those who have not. Society is ran by those who have money and power, and because of this there will always be inequality, and no one will ever be at peace or harmony. Functionalism is the study of society as a functioning system.
