Why despite its significant environmental benefits, is fusion energy still underfunded in western society?

Preliminary Ideas and Refinement
My initial ideas for research project were to focus to focus on an area based on current science and technology. This is because see myself working in a similar field in the future and this topic will give me some experience and knowledge towards what to expect. I also believe certain skills I gain from this subject will be beneficial for university where I hope to complete a Bachelor of Science. To begin my refinement, I created a mind map where I started with the broad topic of science and technology and began writing all topics related to the broad area. This question focused on the future of technology and why it so effective however after discussing it with various other individuals including my physics teacher I decided to refined my question a couple time to finally come up with “Why despite its significant environmental benefits, is fusion energy still underfunded in western society”. This question was more appropriate as it enables me to research both the political and scientific reasoning as to why the technology is underfunded as well as comparing it to other renewable energy sources.
