The Future Surgeon
Introduction: Brief History (Group)
The development of surgical robots have come a long way to understand them better we need to see its progression throughout history. One of the first robots was in 1980, NASA researchers became interested in virtual reality and robotics and had the idea of creating a robotic surgery system but, it was not until 1985 that it was first used. These ideas were applied and the robot Puma 560 was created. This robot is used to perform neurosurgical biopsies with greater precision. In 1988 Imperial College of London, developed PROBOT, a robot with similar characteristics designed to perform prostatic surgeries. At the same time Surgical Supplies Ltd. (Sacramento, USA) Creates ROBODOC for orthopedic

As explained before the arms are controlled by two master controls they provide fingertip precision of movement. But this need to be controlled by the surgeon through the console and the surgeon can calibrate the robot to move a fraction of an inch for every inch the surgeon’s hand moves. The commands that are sent through the controller to the surgical robots arm are moved by actuators. An actuator converts energy into physical motion and actuators produce either rotational or linear motion. (Speich, J. E., & Rosen, J., 2004). The importance of the actuator is because it is what moves the arms and the surgical tool to a desired position. Also through a sensor placed in the arms the actuators can generate force feedback enabling the surgeon to feel the forces between the tool and the tissue. The arm with the high performance video camera provides magnified, enhanced visualization of the operation area. The system also “remembers” the surgeon’s last position, so if he/she needs to rest, the arms can be returned to the same spot when they resume. We should also see the advantages and disadvantages found between human and robot characteristics but also the robot showed us the different capabilities in the operating room so that in the future it may be the best tool of a
