This article by Paula England, Carmen Garcia-Beaulieu, and Mary Ross examines the employment rates for women of color—black women and three groups of Latinas—and white women. They examined the amount of time women are willing/can work, education, and having children, all factors that can change employment rates for these racial/ethnic groups. However, it was concluded that education was the main factor in the employment gap, with white women gaining a higher education level more than women of color, predicting that white women will be more likely to be employed. The authors recognize intersectionality by stating that often employment offers benefits that sometimes cannot be obtainable any other way and the benefits go to women who are already
In this passage “THE GLASS CASTLE” by Jeannette Walls, it's a remarkable memoir of Jeannette and her family lives. The novel begins when Jeannette was three years old and she was making hot dogs and caught herself on fire. She ends up having 2nd degree burns and had to get a skin graft. Jeannette uses characterization so the readers can know about her and her family and how odd they were. Even though her parents always did something bad they always made something out of nothing.
In Marilyn Nelson Waniek's "The Century Quilt" there is a diverse and loving home, and a sure symbol of generations of a family and childhood within the blanket. Through warm imagery and reminiscent tone, the measure of this quilt to Waniek's life is illustrated as a profound connection and admiration of her family and a nostalgic escape. The color illuminated imagery draws a relationship between family and love through the quilt. "

From the Preface to the final chapter Heinrichs is pushing across the development of a strong argument from the offensive side to the defensive side of the table. As Heinrichs is teaching he uses his own knowledge of the art through the three persuasive proofs of Aristotle. In the Preface of the novel Heinrich reels you in with the use of the three proofs, “ few people can say that John Quincy Adams changed their lives….”(Preface) Heinrich brought us in by t5he use of logos of something that probably did not happen to us. In Peggy Orenstein’s book, she effectively argues that a princess-like society immersed in America's culture is damaging to young girls through her interviews, evidence, personal experience, and humorous tone. Starting towards the beginning of her book, Orenstein exposes to the audience that she too liked Disney. She says that "God knows I was a Disney kid. I still have my bona fide mouse ears" (Orenstein 13). By doing this, Orenstein conveys her knowledge of the two sides of her argument: Disney is damaging to young kids or vice versa.
Hingston wrote the essay with a humorous tone in mind, in our society most people can’t stand the fact that people die. The reason Hingston might have written the essay with a humorous tone is because because she didn’t want to limit her audience to just some people. By adding a bit of humor it opens up the door for all different types of people to read it. Almost at the beginning of the essay the author adds a personal experience so that the audience can relate to
In her essay, “The Importance of Work,” from The Feminine Mystique published in 1963, Betty Friedan confronts American women’s search for identity. Throughout the novel, Betty Friedan breaks new ground, concocting the idea that women can discover personal fulfillment by straying away from their original roles. Friedan ponders on the idea that The Feminine Mystique is the cause for a vast majority of women during that time period to feel confined by their occupations around the house; therefore, restricting them from discovering who they are as women. Friedan’s novel is well known for creating a different kind of feminism and rousing various women across the nation.
I enjoyed reading this novel because it’s about a woman, Frances Ann Benedetto, who was abused, physically, emotionally and sexually, by her husband, Bobby Benedetto. This book is about her struggle of fleeing with her 10-year-old son, Robert Anthony Benedetto, who knows nothing of this abuse because his parents always tell him that her injuries are accidents. It also gives you a fitting example of how domestic abuse impacts you and the people around you. I chose this book because when I read the back I was intrigued as to what would happen to Fran and Robert.
