Galatians: 'Allegory Of Sarah And Hagar'

In Galatians 4:21-5:1, known as the “Allegory of Sarah and Hagar,” Paul refers to a passage from Genesis 21. The passage in Genesis tells of Abraham, his wife Sarah, and one of their slaves, Hagar. God promised Abraham that his offspring would become a great nation, but Sarah was barren and well past the typical child-bearing age at that time, so Abraham and Sarah decided that Abraham would have a child with Hagar. Shortly after Hagar gives birth to her son, Ishmael, Sarah becomes pregnant and bears a son named Isaac. Therefore, Abraham had two sons: Ishmael, born as a result of human efforts, and Isaac, one born as a result of God’s covenant with Abraham.
