Karen Armstrong’s view on religion and spirituality is very enriching and I would call it modern. In the book Jerusalem, Armstrong begins with her journey to Jerusalem, a place that for so long she associated with holiness, and sacredness. As a young nun with only exposure to Catholicism, she always envisioned Jerusalem as place that evoked peace. When Armstrong visited Jerusalem, she quickly realized that although it was a city of history, it was also a place with festering animosity between Christians, Muslims, and Jews. Armstrong’s point of view became very apparent during the introduction.

The story Abraham and Isaac conveys a moral lesson about devotion and loyalty within religion. Genesis 22 revolves around God asking Abraham to sacrifice his son, Isaac. Abraham listens to God and takes his son to a mountaintop where he plans to slay his son for the burnt offering. Just before committing the act, an angel of the Lord stops him. Because he did not withhold his son from God, Abraham is promised the same covenant that is talked about in earlier chapters of Genesis.

The Bible explores salvation in different perspectives including reconciliation, redemption, ransom, forgiveness, and justification. Even though the Bible is a unitary book, the new and the old testaments present salvation in different aspects. However, the different aspects are complementary.
