In the discourse involving Galileo’s findings and theories, there has been much reference to the works of the pagan Aristotle. While his genius is indisputable, his ignorance is also evident in matters of which we have newfound knowledge. Consequently, his writings on such subjects as astronomy must be considered only under heavy scrutiny. This scrutiny reveals, as shall be demonstrated, Galileo’s rectitude in supporting the Copernican model of the movement of the Earth.
Galileo Galilei was born in 1564 in Pisa, Italy. He made his discovery of the solar system after he built his very own telescope. He learned that the moon is not smooth but has craters and valleys. He discovered that Jupiter had moons. Galileo did nothing to go against the church's beliefs.
He also discovered a multitude of findings while he researched astronomy and cosmology. Among the many tools he did invent, there are a few that are particularly important. Galileo invented a more accurate alternative to determining the purity of precious metals at the young age of twenty-two. This invention is called a hydrostatic balance, based on the Archimedes principle. He was able to determine metal purity more accurately by wrapping the arm of the counter weight in metal wire and counting the turns of the wire [1].
Musician and astronomer, William Herschel, changed the way we look at the sky in the 1780’s. In 1781, Herschel went on an adventure to construct a telescope with bigger reflecting mirrors than had ever been used before (Hoskin). He made a telescope that was top of the line for that time. He discovered Uranus, which was the first planet to be discovered in a very long time (Upgren). Many people inspired and aided Herschel’s desire to study astronomy.
Galileo was fundamental in the origin of lunar study in being the first to use a telescope to observe the moon and publicize opinions about its surface. Another surveyor of the moon was Alfred Wegener. Wegener proposed meteoric impact long before anyone else. However, the scientific community did not listen to him because of his theory of plate tectonics and Pangea. Alfred Wegener found the correct origin of the moon and its surface features.
Galileo’s main interest was the telescope, he slowly improved it and it’s what he spent most of his time on. Famous astronomer Copernicus theorized before Galileo that the earth might not be the centre of the universe, but instead rotating around the sun. Due to the underpowered telescopes in his time, it wasn’t until Galileo's invention of a more powerful telescope that Galileo could confirm Copernicus' theory that we weren't the centre of everything. Not only did Copernicus precede Galileo, but another famous astronomer, Thomas Harriot, did some amazing things involving telescopes before Galileo. Despite having a significantly weaker telescope than Galileo, he was the first person to draw the moon according to his observations through his telescope. In fact, the international year of astronomy in 2009, which marked 400 years since the first celestial object was drawn, was dedicated to Galileo, and his first drawings of celestial objects, but Harriot actually beat Galileo to drawing space objects.
The Renaissance was a period in time where everything started to change after the middle ages. He spent a lot of time focusing on the movement of planets and recording the patterns of the solar system, with his research he defended Copernicus’s theory that the solar system is heliocentric rather than geocentric. Which means he’s findings disproved the Christian theory of an earth centered system compared to the heliocentric model that puts the sun as the center of the solar
