Greed Runs in the Family: An Analysis of Unfortunate Events In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The House of Seven Gables, a series of unfortunate events occur, one right after another, to the remaining Pyncheon and Maule descendants following the death of Colonel Pycheon many years earlier. It can be argued that the events which occur are a direct result of the curse set upon the Pyncheons by the late Matthew Maule. However, there is far more evidence leading to the argument that each event which occurs only coincides with the characters displaying greed similar to that which possessed the colonel, rather than being a direct result; in order to argue this point, an examination of the Pyncheon family tree must first be done.
In today’s world, besides books and other types of literature, television shows are also sources rich of complex content that forces us to analyze it to gain a deeper perspective. Over the decades television shows have evolved and become more complex as generations passed. In Everything Bad is Good for You by Steven Johnson, Steven Johnson supports the idea that TV shows have a complex structure that involve three elements: multiple threading, flashing arrows, and social networks. The theme of community appears throughout The Hate U Give multiple times. For example, “The nightmares will go away after a while” (Thomas 58). This shows that Maverick could have had this happen to him if he knows how the nightmares are or how they can get. This also shows that Maverick and Starr share a common attitude that has happened to the both of them. Additionally, Maverick says “They’re always the worst right after” (Thomas 58).
The Anglo-Saxon community must be defined by revenge and blood justice. In Beowulf, translated by Seamus Heaney, every character in the poem bears vengeful actions. The Finnsburg episode clearly illustrates how blood justice can be complicated and confusing. Hildeburh, a Dane, mother and the widow of Frisians, is confused as to which side to be loyal to after losing brother, son, and husband in war. Later, Hildeburh is carried back to Denmark because she is unable to make a decision, but has to return to her home.
"Cruel Winter Blues" starts as another crime film revolving around revenge, but as the story proceeds, it becomes something very different. Two mafia guys, veteran Jae-moon and his subordinate, local boy Chi-guk arrive to the small town of Bolgyo in order to ambush and kill Dae-sik, a member of a rival gang. During their stay, they start to adapt to the everyday life in the town: Chi-guk associates himself with the local taekwondo school, since he used to be a champion in the sport, and Jae-moon becomes friendly with the owner of a local restaurant, who happens to be Dae-sik's mother. Redemption, is the action, regaining or gaining possession of something in exchange for payment, or clearing debt. In William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, redemption is a common focus for the protagonist Hamlet, followed by Old King Fortinbras’ son, Fortinbras, and Laertes. These ambitious men embark on a quest for truth and redemption because of the loss of their father’s. In spite of the fluctuations in their quest, their journey for truth and redemption is successful because Fortinbras, Laertes and Hamlet all avenge their fathers’ deaths. Through Active Reversal, Fortinbras’ quest was successful, by Laertes’ Fear of Betrayal his quest to kill Hamlet was successful.
The Tempest can be seen as a play about reconciliation, forgiveness, and mercy. However, while it is clear that the theme of forgiveness is at the heart of the drama, it is unclear to what extent mercy is given. An examination of Caliban and Ariel and their representations of Prospero’s struggle illustrates that there is little, if any, true forgiveness and reconciliation in The Tempest. Prospero’s actions from the beginning of the play seem to contradict his ultimate aim to forgive those of have wronged him. Prospero seizes the opportunity for revenge with the help of his magic and good fortune.
