Introduction In our current society, the media is a very powerful medium which cultivates the way the society thinks and behaves. At this stage of the political economy, the intellectual mode of production is largely made through the media industry. Aspects such as Hollywood, television and movies, they frame and direct our thinkings and values towards the direction as they desire. In this essay we will study the cultural object of “Glee” to answer how the media specifically television uses the concept of hyperreality, music and hegemony to influence the way culture works. We will be highlighting Philippines as one of the examples of censorship. In 2011, Solar Entertainment of the Philippines, has censored a pivotal scene in Kurt and Blaine’s relationship where they shared a kiss. Although many Filipinos are very open about the issue of homosexuality - in fact they celebrate homosexuality in their country with Pride Parades, the media still has the strongest say in the controlling of what is able to be shown on TV. It is very plausible that this act is controlled by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board. This is thus a very clear sign of hegemony where the ruling class, in this case the Philippines government, manipulates the system of values and mores of a society, so that their view becomes the world view. This also means that consumers of Glee acquises the ruling class to have the authority on manipulating their consumption choices. Here, we can see that hegemony in politics can play a huge part in the shaping of a culture and controlling what should be shown in media.
