Freaks and gangers, two infamous predators. In the novel “Enclave,” by Ann McQuire, freaks and gangers are dreaded by the survivors of the plague induced second holocaust. These sly predators lurk out of eyesight, looking either for fresh meat or a new adherent. Throughout the chapters, freaks are getting noticeably smarter, this serves as a new threat to underground enclaves. Although gangers are not an immediate threat in the early chapters, as you read, gangers will become more of an immediate problem. Learning how to fend off and conquer these predators is essential for surviving out of the enclave in the tunnels, and topside. Reigning from the eerie and looming “tunnels,” or what we know as subway tunnels, are freaks. Do not misconstrue the fact that they run in packs. Down here, it's every freak for himself. Though a freak will not directly kill one of its own, once it has been executed, food is food, to fuel their never ending famishes. Freaks could be compared to zombies, in their flesh eating monstrous ways, as what they are is not predominantly stated. The zombie like creatures introduced as Freaks are increasingly getting smarter and reproducing at a large rate, whereas Gangers are not even a problem to be thought of until two hunters were exiled from their enclave. Coming to the conclusion that life in the “tunnels,” or subway tunnels of New York would not be plausible, they travel to “topside,” or the above ground. Here they battle not only gangers, but freaks as well. Finally, the exiles band together with the abandoning gang leader, now conquering the freaks together. Though all seems to be going harmoniously, how would one fair if the others were to change their mind about this
