a. Deviance: Page 194, the violation of norms (or rules or expectations). This gang is a deviant group of people because they are breaking the rules of law. They extort money from business owner for protection. They are taking over large areas of entire cities and they are expecting non-gang membered people to follow their rules or face the consequences.
Since the beginning of time there have always been clicks and groups that were made up of people who had the same goals in mind or same interests. However, nowadays gangs consist mostly of people who commit the same type of crimes together that involve drug charges or murders. Gangs noticeably started getting their “bad image” beginning with a man named Al Capone. The rebellion started with the prohibition era. Al Capone was the most powerful gangster in Chicago during this era.
Secondly, today’s society is full of gangs and some of the members are born into that life and do not know any better, similar to the main character in the outsiders. “One of the worst effects of gang membership is the exposure” (Gangs and Children). Most people are either born into the gang lifestyle or have joined because they have nowhere else to turn to. Being in a gang provides people with that sense of family and
Gang activity has been flourishing since the American Revolution in 1783 (Sante, 1991). Sadly, a great percentage of teenagers have thrived off of this gang activity. Gang activity within the youth is continuing to grow in many places such as Chicago and New York. Gang related homicides have even taken place in small towns such as Lynchburg, Virginia recently. The gang activity that is growing in the Unites States is directing our youth to death
A gang is “a group of people who associate with one another for social or criminal reasons” (Hagedorn). Many people want to end violence not only in homes but in the streets. Gangs are one source of violence in the streets. Gangs have been around in the United States since the mid-1800s (Hagedorn). Gangs form for social, personal, and criminal reasons.
To the outside world gangs are simply violent groups of individuals who cause problems in the community and surrounding areas. This paper provides an action plan to resolve the gang issue over the long-term. In order to resolve the gang situation the purpose for the gang, the influences that keep it strong, and potential catalysts within the community require identification. (Gangs) A deviant subculture is defined as a subculture, which has values and norms that differ substantially from the majority of people in society. When a neighborhood or community favors illegal activities, a criminal subculture is likely to develop such as gangs. Walter Miller states that deviant subcultures don’t arise from the inability of a community to achieve success, but because of a lower-class subculture whose values and norms are different from the rest of society. Subcultures can be a good thing, because they can provide a sense of belonging, interaction with people who have similar interests, and gives members the freedom to express individuality.
The definition of a gang as most of us know it, is an organization or group of criminals. A violent group that comes in many different types’, race, age, and geographic background. However, most gangs reside in urban areas and in poor community. The most recognizable gangs that the American media, culture, and justice system look at frequently is African American gangs. Those are the at-risk gangs or thugs that is frequently said to African American gangs.
