Although gangster rap is catchy and popular, it is hurting our children and communities, kids are becoming more violent because of it, and promotes bad messages and behavior. We need to change the accessibility kids have to this music to protect them from becoming violent, and doing dangerous things like drugs and fighting. Rap music is hurting our children by glorifying bad behavior that they rap about. Drugs, fighting, and guns are a very common topic in the rap game. When kids listen to these songs, talking about killing one another or fighting each other, they get ideas that these are socially acceptable things. Kids will reflect their behavior in the songs onto their lives. If you get told something over and over, like fighting and gun violence is a cool and normal thing, then you will start to believe it. Firearms outnumber children in the US nearly 3:1 (Scott). Knowing this fact, someone can easily acquire a firearm, illegally, or without permission. Diss tracks and tension between gangs on social media has caused deaths in teens before(Rana). A big reasons kids may join gangs are, many feel displaced, and it gives them somewhere to feel welcome (Stewart). Gangs take things very seriously, threats against each other can cause instant retaliation. Rap is a gangster’s music it is undeniable, so when a newly initiated person is getting brainwashed into believing that retaliation is key. All of this gang activity directly relates to the safety of your family and community. Kids as young as eleven are getting targeted for drive by shooting because of their gang associations
