In the book, Flags of our Fathers, written by James Bradley, Bradley writes with pride about his father and the five other men who raised the American Flag on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima. Throughout the book, Bradley utilizes rhetorical questions, stories, interviews, and letters to create a more personal feeling to the book. Also, this builds ethos, making his book credible due to his sources. He creates a dramatic tone by employing short sentence structure and repetition throughout. Furthermore, Bradley also indicates strong feelings towards two major themes of the book, which are pride in his country and a contempt for the media during wartime.
Presidential Courage, written by Michael Beschloss, takes the reader through a series of events over 200 years involving 9 different presidents and how America grew to highly respect them. Out of the 9, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Harry Truman were the top 3 most revered Presidents. Beschloss uncovers the troubles each and every single one of the president’s moment of crisis and how they all overcame these problems while risking the stability of the country. George Washington had faced his biggest challenge in the political field and surprisingly not the battlefield in 1795 when he attempted to turn away from a new war against Great Britain that he knew the United States could not succeed.
Washington was joined by slaves while leading the Continental Army in the field of battle, as well as during his time as president. Yet Wiencek also argues that the Revolution and the establishment of the new democracy changed Washington’s beliefs on slavery. By the end of his life, Washington had changed completely and “sickened by slavery, willing to sacrifice his own substance to end it.” (Wiencek 274) Many of the founding fathers recognized the problems created by slavery.
Fredrick Douglas was a leading American Abolitionist and anti-slavery activist; born a slave, Douglas freed himself when he was twenty years old. Being an activist from the early 1840’s until about 1890 when the Jim Crow Laws were coming to affect (Jim Crow being laws that forced racial segregation). He made waves and changed the lives of millions. In this paper I will discuss what era he lived in, just a few of the thousands of speeches he gave, journal entries he’s written, how he impacted the slave free world we know today and following with some criticism he got when doing such a brave act of giving many people hope. To start, Fredrick was born in February of 1818, dying around February of 1895.
Oakes’ masterful command of the broad literature of slavery, race, and the Civil War era allows him to trace the parallel journeys of two iconic American leaders. Oakes tells an absorbing and didactic story, shifting between accounts of Lincoln and Douglas and ending with their meetings in the White House. By portraying Douglas as a character of equal significance as Lincoln, Oakes not only provides insight into Douglas’s life but also enriches the study of Lincoln. The convergence of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas during the nation’s greatest crisis reveals “what can happen when progressive reformers and savvy politicians make common cause”
They were exceptionally poor and he soon became an understudy to a printer at thirteen years old. This was to be the start of his life in Journalism. Garrison was against slavery, yet when meeting Benjamin Lundy in 1828, he turned into an abolitionist. Lundy was an abolitionist bondage proselytizer and coordinator, who possessed a daily paper. Battalion would later be placed in prison for seven months in the wake of propelling assaults on slave merchants.
The Scoutmaster and the Gunslinger is a great story. In my opinion, Brad and Miles thought they were better than each other. In the story, Brad claims that Miles was out of control and he always ended up getting them in sticky situations and Miles claims that Brad was slow when it came to taking action and he hardly gets any help on his proposals. Both men had high values but they didn’t want to let each other shine independently, which was ridiculous since one was an executive officer and the other one was an operating officer. They did right when they went and got help to solve their problems, not only did it help them, it also help the whole organization as well.
His accounts of the complex events leading to the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation are particularly lucid. Oakes argues that Lincoln had surreptitiously delivered the death blow to slavery by the end of 1861. As to Douglass, I learned a great deal from Oakes's discussion of his three autobiographies, written in 1845, 1855, and 1881 (edited, 1891) and of how these works document the change of Douglass from reformer to an instance of the American success story. Oakes also describes well and detail a chilling meeting between Douglass and other African American leaders and President Andrew Johnson in which Douglass unsuccessfully tried to persuade Johnson to extend the right to vote to African
Washington speech made the people feel patriotic in participating in their government by saying “unity of government” is the “main pillar in the edifice of our real independence”. He caused the audience to have a sense of responsibility in their civic duties, economic prosperity, and defense for their country for their own “tranquility at home, your peace abroad; of your safety; of your prosperity” and “liberty”. Although, Lincoln appealed to the peoples’ conscience on the subject of slavery by quoting “a house divided against itself cannot stand”, making them feel guilty for the division of the states not coming together to decide on keeping slavery or ending it. Also, he appeals to the conscience of the people by questioning “Have we no tendency to the latter condition?” referring to slaves going to states that have abolished slavery still being a claimed as a slave.
On September 2nd, 1862, Abraham Lincoln famously signed the Emancipation Proclamation. After that, there’s been much debate on whether Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation truly played a role in freeing the slaves with many arguments opposing or favoring this issue. In Vincent Harding’s essay, The Blood-red Ironies of God, Harding argues in his thesis that Lincoln did not help to emancipate the slaves but that rather the slaves “self-emancipated” themselves through the war. On the opposition, Allen C Guelzo ’s essay, Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation: The End of Slavery in America, argues in favor of the Emancipation Proclamation and Guelzo acknowledges Lincoln for the abolishment of slavery through the Emancipation Proclamation.
As previously stated, William Lloyd Garrison’s use of rhetoric techniques were executed in a manner better than Frederick Douglass; an example of this is his use of loaded language. In the very beginning of Garrison’s speech he says, “‘that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.’” He used many accounts of loaded language to connect with the listener in the very beginning of his speech to draw the listener into the issue. Garrison also states, “Such, at least, is the verdict of my own soul, on the supposition that I am to be the slave; that my wife is to be sold from me for the vilest purposes; that my children are to
For years slavery was an issue but when the Emancipation Proclamation was issued some issues “resolved.” When this freedom statement was being issued to the Union and the Confederacy many slaves gained freedom and were allowed to fight. The Emancipation Proclamation impacted the war greatly due to the freeing of many slaves. In the Emancipation Proclamation, Lincoln was trying to free slaves in the Confederate States.
All people are created equal, and they deserve life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This is stated in the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution grants these rights to all human beings. In his editorial, “No Compromise With Slavery,” William Lloyd Garrison exposes that freedom and slavery contradict each other. Throughout the text, Garrison uses his passion for abolishing slavery to convince the readers that slavery is amoral and the work of the devil. Lloyd disputes that a country can stand for both freedom and slavery.

Transcendentalists were Americans that believed everyone should be treated equally, so they began six major reform movements. There were many Transcendentalist movements, but the six most important reforms were the prison movement, women’s rights, anti-slavery, temperance, insane and education movement. The prison reform movement was started by the Transcendentalists because they felt that the system was wrong unfair and cruel. All prisoners suffered the same consequences regardless of his or her crime.
