Gary Ridgway was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on February 18, 1949. Ridgway had a difficult time in school. When he was a kid, he took an IQ test a got 82, explaining why his grades were so low. He had to repeat a year of school to pass. His parents would violently fight a large number times and Ridgway would watch. When Gary Ridgway was 16 he stabbed a 6 year old in the liver. Ridgway finally graduated from High School at 20 years old and joined the navy. While he was enlisted he was deported to Vietnam for a while. When he got back, he painted trucks for 30 years. There have been other bodies found with a similar elements to his signature but have yet to be linked to him. One of the bodies found is Rebecca Marrero, who disappeared on December 3, 1982 and was found where one of the Green River’s victims, Marie Malvar, was found. If Rebecca Marrero was one of his victims then she would be his forty-ninth. Gary Ridgway was always a suspect for the Green River killings but when they took him in for a polygraph he passed it. When the investigators looked back at the polygraph after Ridgway was arrested, it turns out he actually failed the test. Ridgway was still on the suspects list, so the investigators took saliva and hair samples from him, which they used in 2001 to compare his DNA to the DNA found on the victims’ bodies. Ridgway was arrested in December of 2001 for the murders of 48 women. He knew that he would be considered for the death penalty so he made a deal with his investigators that he would confess to the murders and also tell them where the other bodies were if he didn’t receive the death sentence.
