As you see the times change you can see the question of what is family being asked more and more each day especially in America with the legalization of gay marriage and also other groups that go against the normal thought of a regular family. If you go back in time you can see that the set definition of a family was a mother, father, and children. The reason for this is because not only the world around us but America itself was a lot more conservative back then. The thought of a family being anything other than what it was supposed to be was frowned upon and tended to never really end well for these people that made an attempt to be different but failed. Although obeying your parents is vital to you staying at home with them I don’t believe this is a good alternative for a decision that a child has made. Especially with having for the most part, a lot of life to live and could easily change this decision again. But for the parents to tell these kids that they're not in the family anymore is a false statement. No one in the family can really control who's in the family. For people in the gay community to call other gay people family and be serious about it doesn’t really make sense. Sexual preference doesn’t make you family because if this was the case all straight people would be calling each other family and you don’t ever see that happening. I believe the gay community uses the word family just like we would use the word family to a good friend in saying that these people are “like” family but aren’t really related to us.
