“The multiple roles that women can play in a society if given the opportunity is really a tremendous asset” (Margaret Chan). Women roles are really a tremendous asset and women play a huge role in our world. Women in today's society have roles ranging from stay at home mom, business women, doctor, and fighting in the army. Women are a so strong and they should not be looked down upon. Three different movies that we watched in class display different women roles and they include, Los Olvidados, Memories of Underdevelopment, and Four Days in September. To begin, Los Olvidados takes place in Mexico City in the mid 1900’s. One women who portrays a strong woman role is Pedro's mother. Women in this film are displayed as objects and taken advantage of. Sergio is the main character and he talks a lot about the underdevelopment of Cuba. Sergio was married to his wife, but then she left him to get out of Cuba. Prior to his wife, he had a girlfriend Hannah and he was in love with her. Sergio talks about how he wondered where she was today and that he should have never left her for a furniture store. Then after his wife leaves he runs into this girl named Elena and she is only 16. They have sex but in one scene Elena avoids having sex because she knows that it is not right. This movie reminds me about the sexual assault topic that is all over the headlines today. Now, women are having the courage to come out and say if they have been sexualy harrased. Recently, in the headliners is the Lawrence Nassar, a gymnastics team doctor. Aly Raisman, a former U.S. olympian spoke about how she and other gymnast were sexually harassed by their doctor. Women should not be viewed as objects and they should be viewed as strong people. The reading that tied into this movie was Motorcycle Diaries. In this book Che Guevara is a medical doctor and he cares for all people. He does not take advantage of women as Sergio does. In fact he loves them and in the reading he writes letters to his mother. To add, he gives people medical check-ups and tells them that they need to eat more
