Gender roles are often shown very bluntly in novels, especially when written by men. Here are examples of gender roles and how they take effect. They are not hard to find, nor interpret.
Amir is the protagonist from The Kite Runner. He is a very weak person, shown often throughout the book. He is seen by his father as weak, picked on by bullies, and does not stand up for himself , and in his father's words “Hes just missing…” “He's just missing a mean streak” Baba sees amir not being mean, as being weak.
Amir isn’t strong, and alpha like Baba wants him to be, because that's how boys are supposed to be. Assef, he's big and strong, he's dominant and mean, even is own parents fear him. Amir seems to think that Baba favors Assef’s dominant personality …show more content…

Hassan is low on the totem pole in terms of his everyday life, but he has a heart of gold. He is not an alpha male, but he is very strong mentally, and emotionally.
Hassan and Assef are perfect in terms of being strong, like boys should and are expected to be. Amir is a weak boy, he doesn't live up to the expectations of his father's wishes, or the basic gender roles of society.
Now , here are some examples from the novel, Les Miserables, and the gender roles within it. The protagonist is a guy named Jean Val Jean. jean val jean has become somewhat of an honorable man. After growing up poor having to steal just to eat, getting imprisoned, trying to escape over and over getting caught, and given more time each time.
Prison turned him into a bitter soul , and thinks everyone is out to get him. After a man who is so kind to him over and over changes his life, for the better, he becomes a smart, kind, humble, and honorable man. These type of people , what he turns into, is the type of men that people like being around. He turned into an alpha kind of man. He turns into a life of the party type of guy, he does good things for people like retrieving Fantine's daughter, he became the mayor because of how much people liked
