Tricia, [15.05.16 15:47] Courage was portayed in the novel, "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini countless times. It is expressed by the main characters such as Hassan, Amir and Baba. Courage is one of the biggest themes of the story as it conveys the message of standing up for what you believe in. It is a trait that almost every character in the story possesses excluding Amir. Amir faces this as a conflict due to his cowardice. He shows difficulty in achieving this in the story. Every encounter with Assef is a manifest of his cowardice. He struggles in speaking up for himself and what he believes in. It's not until the ending of the book until we see Amir's courage. It takes almost the whole novel for Amir to show this trait. Growing up as a kid he showed only cowardice and fear to those who bullied him. He let Hassan do the job of defending. A situation that haunted him throughout the years of growing up was the incident that happened in the alley when he watched Hassan get raped by Assef. Hassan does not object to this scene due to his cowardice. He runs away from the situation and pretends he doesn't know what happened. This leads on to feeling guilty through out his teen years until he gets married. He received a call from another character in the book, Rahim khan, telling him to come back to Kabul. He comes back to meet with Rahim Khan where a lot of revelations occur. Rahim and Amir discussed Hassan's son, Sohrab. Amir first refuses to get Sohrab from Afghanistan due to the perilous surrounding. He changes his mind and takes a huge step by coming back to Afghanistan and risking his life to save Sohrab. He once again meets Assef after a long time and their meeting this time included violence. This shows the huge change in Amir's mindset. He shows courage by risking his life to
