Abiding Ties Loyalty binds us to the people we care about, especially through tough times. This is portrayed in Khaled Hosseini’s book “The Kite Runner” by Hassan and his loyalty towards Amir, a central theme that shapes their relationship. From their childhood in Kabul, Hassan's loyalty is evident through his actions, words, and sacrifices, which remain unbothered by personal suffering and ethnic division. His failure to defend Hassan lives with him, causing Amir to accuse Hassan of stealing. He did this to shrink his feeling of deep shame. Amir uses Hassan as a scapegoat for his feelings of guilt and shame. This causes an even bigger impression on their relationship as it eventually divides them. Amir's loyalty to Sohrab is demonstrated through his efforts to protect, stand up, and be there for him as Hassan once did for Amir. A quote that demonstrates this is “And one more thing, General Sahib,” I said. “You will never again refer to him as a ‘Hazara boy’ in my presence. He has a name and it's Sohrab.” (Hosseini 380). Growing up, Amir’s dignity came before Hassan. Now we see that shift as Amir is defending Sorhab's dignity as well as his humanity. This act demonstrates the deep loyalty Amir has for Sorhab.
