The relationship between Baba and Amir in the Kite Runner Written by Khaled Hosseini, is a novel about growing up in Afghanistan during the Civil War, and later moving to America as Afghan immigrants. Throughout the novel, the relationship between fathers and son plays an important role. Baba and Amir’s relationship constantly changes in the novel from childhood to adulthood. During Amir’s childhood in Afghanistan, Amir and Baba differences causes them to have a very distinct relationship, however in the inside they both are closely related as they gone against each other through on Baba beliefs. Even though Amir spends most of his childhood trying to live up his father expectations, Baba never feels the father and son connection that Amir truly believes in. Amir, being a young boy tries on helping Baba with all of the chores and eventually go to the flea market on the weekends to sell stuff on whatever they find to earn money. According to Hosseini, “Amir can bury memories“ (136). Amir tries on starting a new chapter with his dad in order for them to appreciate each other more. During their stay in America, there is almost a reversal in roles between the two. Amir is trying to be more confident and persistent, while Baba feels out of place and lost for his homeland. Amir is the confident enough that he tries to be more like a leader who stands up for himself, like when he stands his ground after deciding to take a major in English. Both Amir and Baba lives have changed when they flew to America that they start to have a more proper relationship.
