Gender roles Essay Negative gender stereotypes have been portrayed on TV for a while now, it’s not harmful or anything but it still isn’t helping the viewers get a good idea of gender roles in today’s society. In this essay I will be talking about the gender stereotyping that is shown in two TV shows that are favored by many. F is for Family and Breaking Bad will be those two lucky contenders showing us how they portray each gender so, let's get into it. “Say my name” most of us know where this line is from and if you don’t, you better start watching Breaking Bad. F is for family is a newish show that was added to Netflix back in 2015. It takes place in the 1970s and filled with crude humor so you already know this isn’t going to portray women in the nicest way possible. The show centers around Frank Murphy, and his dysfunctional family. I don’t need to get much into story here but the basic plot is all over the place. Now, the gender stereotyping in this show is ridiculous but it’s also done this way to show how nuts the 70s were. In the show, women are portrayed as either total slut bags or stay at home moms. The show also plays on the Ill tempered housewife stereotype because the main character didn’t originally want his wife to get a job because he felt that since he was the man it was his responsibility to provide money. The show also sometimes goes out of its way to show how stereotyped the 70s were, as there was a part where Frank’s daughter was wearing an eyepatch and she said that she was a pirate to which Frank replies, “girls can’t be pirates.” I’ve seen both seasons and I saw this shown about 3 times all with different topics and Frank’s same reply to them. All the males in the show are just shown as either minor background character or heavily stereotyped 70s tropes. You will almost always see a male with a beer in every episode but strangely, a women without one
