INTRODUCTION

1.1 Introduction
The number of hours spent watching television in the United States is relatively high with the average viewer watching up to 150 hours of television per month (Gandossy, 2009).
According to cultivation theory, people who watch a great deal of television may have their perceptions of reality skewed by the content they are watching. A common symptom is Gerbner's “mean world syndrome” (cited in Bryant and Zillman, 1986), is when someone who watches a lot of violent television shows will feel that the world is more dangerous than it really is.

Despite appearing on an expensive pay-cable service, the show has regularly attracted more than five million viewers, outpacing many high-profile serials on the traditional network channels. (Stubbs. 2013)
Popular fantasy television series, Game of Thrones, was created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. The series is based on the A Song of Ice and Fire novels written by George R.R Martin. The series debuted on American cable HBO channel in April 2011.
The fantasy series is based in the continents of Westeros and Essos, where power struggles amongst noble families and the poor control the Seven Kingdoms.
A total of four seasons have aired since June 2011, with season five currently in production and plans for season six soon thereafter. The fifth season of this best-loved series is scheduled to première in 2015.
1.3 Problem Statement
This study investigates the portrayal of women in Game of Thrones, particularly focusing on sexuality and violence against the female characters.
