Genesis is supposed to teach individuals a moral code, so they can interact with the world in a healthy manner, however, I disagree. The so called “morals” that the bible teaches are disrespectful and degrading to women, teach that God can be arbitrary and harm humanity without reason, and teach a person that deception is the best tool to move through life. Women are treated as if they are property or livestock. They are also silenced, disrespected and their worth is basically dirt. In the very beginning of Genesis Eve did not serve any other purpose besides being a companion to Adam and then she is blamed for the downfall of humanity such as when Adam said in Genesis 3, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me the fruit and I ate.”. For example, in Genesis 20, Abraham deceives King Abimes to gain wealth and King Abimelech suffered because he had done wrong to a favored one. This is exemplified in the quote, “You are about to die because of the woman whom you have taken; for she is a married woman.”. Another example of deception is when Jacob stole Esau’s birthright in Genesis 27. In order to gain favor, Jacob disguises himself as his brother in order to be blessed by his dying father whose version of reality had become distorted. This is shown in the passage when Isaac said, “Be lord over your brothers and may your mother's sons bow down to you. Cursed be everyone who curses you, and blessed by everyone who blesses you.”. This isn’t exactly what should be taught to children either. I understand that Genesis is supposed to explain the creation of our world, but why do they have to include all of the dysfunctional stories that teahcers use to create examples of how to
