Have you read The Canterbury Tales? Do you know Geoffrey Chaucer? If you did not know the answers to the questions i’m here to tell you about Geoffrey Chaucer and his life. Geoffrey Chaucer is a well known British poet in the 1300’s and still is a well known British poet today. He has written many famous poems before his death in the 1400’s.
Geoffrey Chaucer was the child of John Chaucer and Agnes De Copton. He was born in 1343 in London, United Kingdom. In 1366, Chaucer married his lovely wife Philippa Roet. Philippa Roet is the sister of Katherine Swynford who is later the third wife of John of Gaunt (Williams IX). “It is thought that Chaucer was sent for his early schooling to St. Paul’s Almonry. From there he went on to be a page in the household of the Countess of Ulster, later Duchess of Clarence, wife of Lionel the third son of Edward III” (Coghill XI). “Geoffrey Chaucer is the most famous writer of Medieval England.” No one knows when Chaucer started to write poetry. In 1369 The Book of the Duchess was written. This poem was about Chaucer’s time under the Duchess (Historylearningsite.co.uk). Him being in France influenced his interest in starting to write poetry (Coghill Forefront). Chaucer is the first native English ruler. He is known as the “Master” by the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. He aspired and established writers during his time. (Williams 10).
Chaucer converted literature and philosophy from French and Latin to English. “His treatise on the astrolabe shows his interests in practical science, and his works are strewn with metaphors and allusions drawn from medicine, law, astrology, music, and biblical exegesis” (Williams 1).
