This article focuses on the geographical perspective of American football. American football is statistically one of the most popular sports in the United States and it consists of some of the most athletic men in North America. Originating in the late 1800’s, this industry is now worth billions. The geographical perspective will allow for a closer look at this sport’s most popular areas, its cultural importance in different areas, its impact on the environment, and its economic impact on different cities. Over the years, we see a continuous change in the NFL’s rules, strategies, equipment, and safety measures. From the introduction of the forward pass, to the expansion of rules, the sport continues to adapt to the societal norms while maintaining its core traditions. When it comes to the regional popularity of American football, there is no better way to evaluate it than by running a survey. According to Gramlich, Jackson, and Rotolo, who asked 12,000 Americans which sport they would choose as being ‘America’s sport’, even if they didn’t follow sports, they concluded the following: “More than half of Americans (53%) say America’s sport is football – about twice the share who say it’s baseball (27%).
