1) George and Lennie presumably have traveled with each other a long time. Because of this, George has to live with Lennie and the things he does and says, and sometimes George can crack and get very upset with Lennie. Just imagine only being able to live with someone very annoying. We can infer that the two have been together a long time because normal people don’t get fed up and angry over some ketchup. 2) In this time period, people moved around to work. Employment agencies sent workers to go and work at one farm. After the job was completed (they usually were employed for a month) they would get paid and move to the next job. But, George has Lennie to look after. Lennie causes problems. For example, Lennie broke Curley’s hand, killed Curley’s wife and touched the girl in the town of Weed. The common goal for all these workers was to go and get paid, but when you have a sidekick who gets fired, you don’t get paid. These problems make it hard to work because you have to deal with the problems that come with Lennie. 3) It was typical for single workers of this time period to work their thirty days, then afterward go out and spend all of it on things that they deem luxurious, then go back to work. Even though in the book it does not specifically mention Lennie having a mental disability, it is obvious he does have one. Lennie does not understand many things, like how his actions affect others and personal space. For example, he always kills the mice he gets his hands on by accident. He always ends up crushing them, even though he has done the same thing before. These issues make it hard for an employer to work with Lennie. If he cannot handle petting a mouse, how can he handle working with other people? George and Lennie stick together, so if Lennie gets fired George has to go with
