1984 – George Orwell

Nineteen Eighty-Four was written by George Orwell and published in 1949. It was a very important novel which helped to make totalitarianism disappear once for all. Even though the World War II had already ended, many people still believed that totalitarianism was actually a good thing and Nineteen Eighty-Four brought a new perspective to the world. People are supposed to be equal. However, they were being governed under hostility and absolute control.

In 1936, Orwell went to Spain where he saw the horrendous atrocities committed by the fascists. In addition, totalitarian authorities were rising and inspired George Orwell who feared for the human´s future. Thus Orwell decided to write his anti-totalitarian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. The novel itself is placed in the Oceania where the nation is governed by a party that watches the population wherever they go through screens. The party leader is known as “Big brother ” and his face is present in every screen and poster with the message “Big brother is watching you“. Winston is the main character, a worker of the party who hates the totalitarian regime and dreams with a riot. Throughout the book Winston develops a relationship with Julia who also hates the party. Both keep their affair in secret otherwise they would be severely punished. In Nineteen Eighty-Four , Orwell presents the “perfect” totalitarian society. How would it be if the Nazis or the soviet Russia had not been defeated? Orwell presents us the darkest prediction of an imaginary reality.
Fortunately this did not become true. Nevertheless, Nineteen Eighty-Four remains a classic of literature as a force against all abusive governments that used history, technology or even language to control people´s minds. Orwell feared that the world was moving toward totalitarianism and people might lose freedom and rights.
The novel was published in 1949. Back then there were no technologies as in Nineteen Eighty Four, the screens and missiles were still thoughts. Orwell clearly pictures the danger of totalitarianism to the world and created a remarkable dystopian ahead of his time.
George Orwell creates Winston as the voice of his warning to the world. Winston is the last man who thinks, who worries about freedom, who fears for his own security. Winston questions the point of human intellectuality if they cannot use it. Nineteen Eighty-Four regime could actually become true if mankind did not stand for its rights.
