When Winston states, “The proles are human beings. Whenever there is political corruption, power and control are involved. Although there are a few similarities between Castro’s dictatorship and Big Brother’s totalitarian from 1984, not many parallels can be seen. As someone who controls Oceania, Big Brother is known to be very powerful. He has the ability to manipulate his party members into thinking that he is superior.
Winston is working in his department on “rectifying” documents the Party has assigned to him. He begins to explain how his job is to change the original information given to him, to what the government wants it to be. Winston describes just how the government is able to influence the people’s minds: “It was therefore necessary to rewrite a paragraph of Big Brother’s speech in such a way as to make him predict the thing had actually happened” and later Winston says, “in no case would it have been possible, once the deed was done, to prove that any falsification had taken place” (Orwell 39-40). Winston’s job is to change and delete the past in order to match the Party’s current slogan or belief. The government is creating false facts and manipulating the truth to control the citizens of Oceania.

It took Stalin years to find a system powerful enough to keep the people repressed until his downfall of the USSR. Hitler’s ideas were strong enough to maintain power for roughly ten years before he became to greedy. The required manner achieve power, to the extent of absolute control, is known to the party. The awareness of what needs to be done is the single distinguisher from past totalitarian governments that the party holds.
Winston becomes disenchanted by the Party’s ways of maintaining control over the people of Oceania by feeding the citizens propaganda so that they will mindlessly follow whatever the Party says is true. Therefore, Winston begins to doubt the party because of their destruction of the past and its events, ruining people's ability to think and be independent.
Correspondence Theory, developed in the early twentieth century, asserts that a belief in truth is based on true facts, aligning with a modern understanding of the word ‘truth’. Surely, one does not initially associate the universe of George Orwell’s 1984 with the idea of truth. Winston Smith, the protagonist of the novel, works in the records department of the Ministry of Truth, where he rewrites the past to reflect what the Party wants the citizens of Oceania to believe. In 1984, a dystopian novel written by George Orwell, proles are represented as being generally incompetent in the ability to think and rebel against their stolen rights. However, as the story progresses, Winston comes to a realization that proles are the only ones with the character of human beings and the strength to gain consciousness to overthrow the party. Through this characterization of the proles, Orwell satirizes the detrimental effects of Stalin’s totalitarian government in employing total control and perpetual surveillance of the people in USSR to maintain an established hierarchy.
