Animal Farm and Leadership The pigs became the leaders and the other animals accepted them because the pigs are the cleverest. What other qualities are important for a leader to have? The notion of a leader to be only intelligent is widely debated in today’s society. According to the Webster Dictionary a leader is “one who or that which leads or a chief director”(Morehead 1995). This definition is exactly what I support. I believe that a leader speaks eloquently, is educated, and is a quick and strategic thinker. I believe that a person who speaks eloquently is an inspiring person who can go up to people to solve problems around the world. A person who can motivate people to do what they want them to do in life “Squealer represents a totalitarian government’s propaganda machine. Squealer is a clever pig and thinks fast. A perfect example of this is when “the animals dare to question an aspect of Napoleon’s regime, Squealer threatens them with Jones’s return” (Asnes and Kissel 3). The crafty pig also tells the animals other lies such as “Is it written down anywhere” (Orwell 47). These types of statements convince the animals that if something is NOT written down, then it cannot be true. The animals are convinced “they had been mistaken” (Orwell 47). Another key factor in leadership is being well educated. The pigs are already intelligent animals and they use the educational limitations of the other animals to their advantage. For example the pigs study while the other animals work, “to gain intelligence and education early on” (Asnes and Kissel 2). “The pigs also use their literacy to learn trades from manuals giving them an opportunity for economic specialization and advancement” (Asnes and Kissel 2).
