George S. Patton Jr can be seen as the persona of America itself, having a loud personality and often times viewed as arrogant, but these attributes gave him the ability to raise morale and lead on the battlefield. His decisiveness and tenacity led him to have distinguished victories in Northern Africa, Sicily, and the final battles in France and Germany. His roles in WWII were instrumental in the downfall of the Nazi regime and Patton's impact on armored warfare and leadership were substantial, with the U.S. Army adopting many of his aggressive strategies for its training programs following his death. Patton still in command of the 2nd Armored Division landed his men on the shores of Casablanca. With little French resistance Patton took the city in just two days. Just a few months later the US would see how well the Germans fought. The Germans would ultimately humiliate the US II corps. under the command of General Fredenhall. The US forces had to retreat numerous times against the Germans superior experience and equipment. After the defeat General Eisenhower selected Patton to take charge of the US II corps and just after several months of training Patton was ready to take on the Germans. Operation Quicksilver was part of a larger deception plan called Operation Fortitude South/Operation Bodyguard. The plan was used to cloak the buildup of the Allied Army and disguise the destination of the invasion ("What Was General Patton Doing on D-Day?", 2015). The Germans were very impressed with Patton’s leadership, Eisenhower used this to his advantage. Eisenhower used Patton to make the Germans think the Allied forces were invading through Pas de Calais, France by placing him in Britain and gave him command of a fake army unit, the First US Army Group (FUSAG).
